Savannah Sky
SAVANNAH SKY
New Music by Charles Maring
Savannah, Georgia… There’s something about this place.
When my wife Jennifer and I rolled into Savannah in late December of 2020 we found a small city with a creative pulse, beautiful light, kind people, and a rich history. Truth is, we fell in love with this little gem of a town by the sea, and decided to call this home for at least a little while.
I had been working on an intricate acoustic guitar riff with a harmony that cut through at the break. Quite honestly I didn’t know what to do with it, but then one day sitting on our terrace and watching the beautiful ever changing Savannah sky the lyrics began to appear. I spend a lot time reflecting on life here on the terrace soaking in the visual beauty of this place with a view of the Talmadge bridge, the many steeples that grace the skyline, and the living oaks dripping with Spanish moss.
Of course, then there is the ocean as well. With Tybee Island beach just minutes away we also find ourselves soaking in the Tybee Island light on a regular basis. The ocean always brings me that quiet reflective quality I love… I can’t quite put my finger on it but Savannah has an energy, and it’s been a joy to have the opportunity to spend time here.
We decided a long time ago not to identify with a single location, but to make it a point to experience different lives on our creative journey. As full time artists, in this modern connected world, we are free to travel and live wherever we want as we can easily join our loyal clients whenever, and wherever they are. And, of course, this impacts our art and creative offering in meaningful ways. We have global clients, and they all benefit from this choice and vision.
Savannah is known as a ghost town, that is to say that it is haunted. So, I hoped to bring that ghostly feel into the music. When composing, I kept that original rhythmic guitar riff which, along with the drums, bass, and percussion, drive the song. I brought in strings, an organ, and a jazz fusion electric piano, and weaved them all together to make it sonically interesting panning some left, and others right. To bring more of that ghostly vibe I added some echo and delay to the electric guitars, and brought in an English horn to add depth. Finally, for the frosting, there is a touch of sci-fi ambiance throughout the mix, but especially at the opening and ending.
Savannah Sky was a beautiful song to write, produce, and record… This is what came out my heart as I try to process this time in our lives. 2020-2021 has been a roller coaster for us all, but finding myself having new experiences in this one of a kind little city has inspired me to write a new song. I hope you enjoy the composition…
Cheers… Charles
